Former Indian player Gautam Gambhir said before the India-Pakistan match in the World Cup that this is the first time in the history of India-Pakistan cricket that India will play with a stronger bowling line than Pakistan. The performance of the Indian bowling line in the match confirms Gambhir’s observation. The Indian bowlers also rewrote the preconceived notion that the India-Pak match was a battle between India’s batting and Pakistan’s bowling with this match.
The Pakistan batsmen did not have the power to defend the bowling line-up of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. The Indian bowling line which bowled Australia all out in the first match, took 8 wickets of Afghanistan in the second match. After taking 10 wickets again against Pakistan, the total wickets taken by the Indian bowling line in the tournament became 28. New Zealand, who have taken 28 wickets from 3 matches, are the other team who are joint first in the wicket-taking with India. But Indian bowlers have a better bowling average and economy rate than New Zealand.
Pace is strength
The strength of Indian bowling is the pacers who are equally good in the first overs and death overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj have already taken 11 wickets in the tournament. The average economy rate of both is less than 5. The pressure they put on the opposing team’s batsmen without conceding runs in the first overs helps the spinners to get wickets in the middle overs.
Pakistan got the job
Babar Azam-Muhammad Rizwan’s resistance in the middle overs has carried Pakistan through most of the matches in recent times. Both of them had started such a rescue operation against India as well. The main challenge before India was to demolish it. Captain Rohit Sharma appointed Bumrah and Siraj for that task. Bumrah took the wicket of Rizwan with a beautiful off-cutter while Siraj returned Babar with his special scrambled seam delivery pitched outside the off-stump and into the wicket. It was through these wickets that India took hold of the match. Pakistan lost the remaining 8 wickets while adding 36 runs from 155 for 2.
