In the north Indian city of Amritsar, a man has been beaten to death after he tried to commit sacrilege in a temple, according to those present. The Golden Temple is the holiest site for the Sikh.
It happened during evening prayers on Saturday. The man had climbed over a railing and tried to grab a sword near the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikh religion.
TV footage shows people in the temple running towards the man to stop him. He was then allegedly kicked out of the temple and eventually killed, the police reported.
The supreme political leader of the state of Punjab spoke of a “appalling attempt at sacrilege”.
