The Indian government is urging people to put aside Western traditions on Valentine’s Day and cuddle a cow rather than kiss their lover.
According to The Guardian the Indian government has declared February 14 as “Hug a Cow” day.
The government encourages the people to put aside Western traditions on Valentine’s Day and instead focus on the country’s own traditions.
Over the past decade, Valentine’s Day has become an increasingly popular event in India, bolstered by marketing and promotions featuring bouquets, heart-shaped gifts and romantic gestures.
Cows are considered sacred animals in Hindu India. According to the government, hugging a cow will bring “emotional wealth” to the people, as well as increase people’s “individual and collective happiness”.
