New York ∙ India votes against Russian interest in the United Nations General Assembly. In the 193-member assembly, 107 countries, including India, rejected Russia’s request for a secret vote on the draft resolution condemning the annexation of the Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson to Russia. Only 13 countries are in favor of the secret ballot. 39 countries, including China, abstained. The motion was presented by Albania.
Russia filed an appeal against the action of the President of the General Assembly who considered a public vote on the resolution sufficient. 104 countries, including India, voted against the revision while 16 countries voted in favor. 34 countries abstained. With this, the General Assembly decided not to re-examine.
Last month India abstained from voting on the Security Council resolution against the Russian-led referendum in the Ukrainian provinces.
