India’s Media Regulatory Authority has called for a thorough investigation after the body of a journalist was discovered buried inside a septic tank, which had been covered with cement.
Freelance journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, aged 28, had been reporting on the corruption and Maoist insurgency that has been rocking the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh for half a century.
Additionally, he was responsible for a popular YouTube channel, “Bastar Junction”.
The Media Council of India, which has expressed its “concern” over Chandrakar’s alleged murder, asked in a press release last night for a detailed report on the case.
The journalist’s body was found on January 3 in the state of Chhattisgarh when authorities managed to trace his mobile phone signal after his family alerted the police about his disappearance.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the case.
More than 10,000 people have been killed in the insurgency by Maoist rebels who say they are fighting for the rights of marginalized indigenous people in India’s resource-rich central regions.
Vishnu Deo Sai, chief minister of Chhattisgarh state and a member of India’s ruling party, called the journalist’s death “tragic” and promised the “severest punishment” for those responsible.
Last year, India was ranked 159 out of 180 in Reporters Without Borders’ global press freedom rankings.
