Moscow. August 23. INTERFAX.RU – The Vikram lander with the Pragyan lunar rover of the Indian automatic interplanetary station Chandrayaan-3 (“Chandrayan-3”) on Wednesday made a successful soft landing on the surface of the Earth’s natural satellite, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) reported.
“We have made a soft landing on the moon, India on the moon,” – said the head of the organization Shri Somanath.
The landing was carried out at 18:02 Indian time (at 15:32 Moscow time) in the region of the unexplored South Pole of the Moon.
Thus India became fourth country after the USSR, the USA and China, which landed its apparatus on the moon.
The launch of the LVM3 rocket with the automatic interplanetary station Chandrayaan-3 was carried out on July 14 from the launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Center, located on the island of Sriharikota. On August 5, the station was launched into a lunar orbit.
After landing, the lunar rover, equipped with various research equipment, will leave the platform and begin chemical analysis of the surface of the Earth’s natural satellite. The mission of the lunar rover weighing 20 kg is designed for 14 Earth days.
The previous attempt to send a lander and rover to the Moon was made in 2019 as part of the Chandrayaan-2 mission. Then the orbiter managed to enter a circumlunar orbit, but due to communication problems that arose, the specialists could not correct the landing of the landing module that had separated from the interplanetary station and crashed on the surface of the moon.
The orbiter of the Chandrayaan-2 mission remained in orbit and continues to collect scientific data on the Earth’s natural satellite. Chandrayaan-3 does not include such a mission.
