India sets new world record for covid-19 cases in one day


India today registered 78761 cases of the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a new world record, health officials announced.

The previous daily record had been set on July 17 by the United States, when it diagnosed 77,638 contagions, according to data compiled by the news agency France-Presse (AFP).

India is the country with the highest number of new infections last week (488,271), ahead of the United States (293,419), which today approached the limit of six million officially declared cases, Brazil (263,791), Colombia (66,811 ) and Argentina (64,437).

The Indian Ministry of Health has also announced 948 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 63,498.

More than 25 million cases of infection with the new coronavirus have been reported worldwide, more than half on the American continent, according to an AFP count.

In total, at least 25 million cases have been diagnosed. Almost four out of ten cases were detected in the United States and Brazil, by far the two most affected countries, with 5,960,652 infected (182,760 deaths) and 3,846,153 infections (120,262 deaths), respectively.

Worldwide, there are 842915 deaths caused by the covid-19, according to the AFP count from official sources.

In Europe, the largest number of fatalities is in the United Kingdom, followed by Italy, France and Spain.

Portugal accounts for 1,818 deaths in 57,448 cases of infection.

In Africa, there are more than 29,000 confirmed dead deaths in more than 1.2 million people infected in 55 countries.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases.
