India Reports First Death Due to Monkeypox

The death of the youth in the southern state of Kerala is the first in Asia.

“The 22-year-old Indian man died on Saturday (30/7/2022). The government has also isolated 21 people who had been in contact with him. The person reached Kerala on 21 July 2022 but visited the hospital only on 26 July 2022 when he showing fatigue and fever,” said Minister K Rajan as quoted from Aljazirah on Tuesday (2/8/2022).

In addition, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said the man’s family informed authorities that he had tested positive in the United Arab Emirates before returning to India.

India’s federal health ministry did not comment on the deaths, except to say that the government had set up a task force of senior officials to monitor cases of monkeypox in the country, where local media have reported at least five infections.

The WHO said late last month that 78 countries had reported more than 18,000 cases of monkeypox, the majority in Europe. It said the monkeypox virus causes a disease with milder symptoms than smallpox and occurs mainly in central and western Africa. This disease is transmitted from animals to humans.

Human-to-human transmission occurs through contact with body fluids, lesions on the skin or on internal mucosal surfaces, such as in the mouth or throat, respiratory droplets and contaminated objects.

Last week, Spain reported two monkeypox-related deaths and Brazil’s first. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global health emergency on July 23, 2022.
