India records daily record of almost 20,000 infections

Lusa

India has recorded nearly 20,000 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, a new record, as several states have re-imposed partial or total blockages to curb the spread of covid-19.

India identified nearly 100,000 cases last week, the Ministry of Health reported. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has identified 548,318 cases, making it the fourth most affected in the world, after the United States, Brazil and Russia.

The total death toll in India is now 16,475.

Despite the lifting of some roadblocks in some states, areas of high population density that include the country’s financial and national capitals, Bombay, and New Delhi, respectively, most of these restrictions have been eased in restaurants, shopping centers, parks and public transport.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 500,000 deaths and infected nearly 10.1 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the France-Presse news agency (AFP).

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
