India Protests Chinese Government’s New Map Showing Disputed Territory

NEW DELHI – India has reacted angrily to a new map released by the Chinese government showing Beijing’s claims to the disputed territory, as the dispute threatens to escalate relations between the two Asian giants at a major diplomatic juncture.

While the map did not show any new Chinese territorial claims, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said on Tuesday that India had lodged a formal diplomatic protest. China’s Ministry of Natural Resources publishes its so-called “standard map” of China annually, and it typically shows Arunachal Pradesh, a state in India’s far northeast, as part of China. The state of Arunachal, ruled by India and long claimed by China as “Southern Tibet”, was the scene of fighting during the 1962 war between the two countries.
