The tournament will be held in September. The Asian Cup will be held in the 50 over format while the ODI World Cup will be held in the October-November window. In 2016 and 2022 the tournament was reduced to a T20 competition. Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman Jay Shah has announced the format and groups for the new edition of the 2023 and 2024 cricket calendars.
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have already secured their places in the tournament. One team will play a qualifying match. The qualified team will be placed in a group consisting of India and Pakistan. Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka belong to another group. The men’s Premier Cup will see the participation of 10 teams divided into two groups of 20 matches. In the 2022 edition, Hong Kong qualified and were placed alongside India and Pakistan in the preliminary group stage.
The UAE hosted the Asia Cup in 2018 and 2022. The defending champions are Sri Lanka, who came to an unlikely event in September 2022 and won the title. This time Pakistan got the chance to host the tournament. However, as India has refused to travel to Pakistan, the next edition is likely to be held in the UAE.
Team India will file a formal request for a neutral venue, although Pakistan is not ready to give up the right to host the tournament on their home soil. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has warned that if India does not come to Pakistan for the Asian Cup, they will withdraw from the ODI World Cup in India by the end of 2023.
A total of 145 ODIs and T20Is will be played in the two-year cycle (2023-2024) announced by the ACC. 75 games will be played in 2023 and 70 in 2024.
Also, the Emerging Asia Cup is back. This year, the men’s 50 over format will be played in July with eight teams. The tournament will be held in December next year but will be in a T20 format. The Women’s Emerging Asia Cup to be held in June this year will be an eight-team T20 tournament.
