New Delhi: In contrast to last year’s summit in Bali, Indonesia, Russia’s name was omitted from the joint declaration condemning the invasion of Ukraine in the series of talks led by India. Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa initially stood with India. Later, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Mexico gave their support. After that, the G7 countries were convinced.
Indian Sherpa Amitabh Kant said the joint declaration was reached after nine months of painstakingly crafted 200-minute non-stop talks on Friday night. It was a joint effort of developing countries with growing markets. No one expected consensus.
After the rough agreement, the draft started. After three drafts were prepared, separate negotiations with each country began. Discussions with Sherpas in Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa proved crucial. Then came Mexico, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Pressure from emerging markets favored India’s position.
The G7 also agreed that development issues are more important than war issues. Talks were held with Russia and China. The final draft was submitted on Friday night. There were fears yesterday morning that the unanimous declaration at the New Delhi summit would be overturned by someone opposing it. Amitabh Kant revealed that the exception was the critical interventions made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
