India Hit by Covid Tsunami, Breaks 90,000 Cases a Day

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Additional cases Covid-19 from India broke the 90 thousand mark in 24 hours until Thursday (6/12). This spike comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) warns of the dangers of a Covid “tsunami”.

India’s Ministry of Health reported that overall, the country recorded an additional 90,928 cases of Covid-19, 57 percent adrift of the 482,876 cases reported the day before.

As reported ReutersThis addition brings the total corona virus infection in India now at 35.11 million cases.

In addition, India’s Ministry of Health also reported an additional 325 deaths on Thursday, bringing the total death toll from COVID-19 to 482,876.

Meanwhile, India also reported its first death due to infection with the Omicron variant of Covid-19 on Wednesday (5/1). India’s Ministry of Health said the patient who died was a man with diabetes in the state of Rajasthan.

Facing this surge, the Indian government began to ramp up vaccination efforts. They started vaccinating 15 to 18 year olds.

However, Indian political parties are still holding campaigns ahead of the general election for the state. According to health experts, this kind of campaign has the potential to exacerbate the spike in Covid-19 cases.

Health experts have also called on hospitals to prepare for an explosion of coronavirus infections.

“Enlarge hospital capacity and optimize care for people who need it most,” said University of Michigan Epidemiologist Bhramar Mukherjee.
