India more than doubled its purchases of Russian oil in May compared to the previous month. Thus, deliveries amounted to more than 840,000 barrels per day. Commodity analysts at Kpler expect purchases to pick up again in June.
State Department senior energy security adviser Amos Hochstein said that in recent conversations he asked Indian officials not to buy too much Russian oil. He noted that the US cannot ban the purchase of crude oil because it has not imposed secondary sanctions on those sales.
Hochstein said there was a “ceiling” on how much oil India could buy from Russia, but did not elaborate.
