Lucknow ∙ The opposition India Front has completed the division of seats in Uttar Pradesh for the Lok Sabha elections. Congress will contest in 17 out of 80 constituencies in the state. Rae Bareli, Amethi and Varanasi constituencies were given to the Congress by the Samajwadi Party (SP). The remaining 63 constituencies will be contested by the SP and its allies.

Uttar Pradesh is the first state to complete the India Front seat allocation ahead of the general elections. SP leader Akhilesh Yadav said that he will contest in alliance with the Congress. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party and the Congress were at loggerheads over seat sharing.

The seat agreement came out after Akhilesh clarified that the talks would end well and there would be no conflict. Sonia Gandhi was the only Congress candidate who won from Rae Bareli in the last Lok Sabha elections in the state. Even Rahul Gandhi who contested in Amethi failed. This time, in the context of Sonia being elected to the Rajya Sabha, there are indications that her daughter and AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi will contest in Rae Bareli. Priyanka Gandhi played a crucial role in the seat sharing discussions. Congress will have to find a strong candidate in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi.

Nitish Kumar, who was a senior leader in the India Alliance, recently left the front and joined the NDA. Rashtriya Lok Dal leader from Uttar Pradesh Jayant Chaudhary also left the alliance. In this context too, it is estimated that the division of seats will help the India Front to move forward without further hiccups.
