Indian police have arrested five more men in connection with the gang-rape of a Spanish tourist, bringing the total to eight people, local media reported today.
The attack on the woman, who was traveling on a motorbike with her husband, took place last week in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, where the couple had been camping.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency released photographs of the five suspects, who had been handcuffed and tied together with rope.
Yesterday, three other men were brought before the court and remanded in custody.
“Eight arrests have been made so far in connection with this alleged gang-rape of a Spanish woman,” PTI wrote, citing police officers.
Authorities handed over a check for $12,000 to the couple as part of a “victim compensation program,” NDTV television reported.
A Spanish tourist was touring India with her husband on their motorcycle. According to her, she was gang-raped by some people while she was sleeping in a tent.

An average of nearly 90 rapes per day were recorded in India in 2022, according to official figures.
However, a large number of incidents go unreported due to victim stigmatization and a lack of confidence in police investigations.
