India Drafts National Strategy for Robotics to Become Global Hub

India has published a draft national strategy for robotics to position the country as a global ‘robotics hub’. The strategy, which is now open for public consultation, seeks input from start-ups, manufacturing companies and companies involved in the 4.0 industry. Feedback on the project can be submitted through the MyGov platform until October 31.

The draft national strategy recognizes the significant impact that advances in artificial intelligence (AI) will have on cyber-physical systems such as robotics. It highlights the importance of robotic automation in delivering social, economic and technical outcomes worldwide.

To ensure India’s global leadership in robotics, the strategy identifies four strategically important sectors: manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare and national security. These industries will play a crucial role in the development and adoption of robotics in India.

To help the country become a global leader in this field, the strategy proposes to establish a Robotics Innovation Unit (RIU) as India’s institutional framework. Known as the National Robotics Mission, this initiative aims to implement a comprehensive, coherent and effective national robotics strategy.

The release of the draft National Robotics Strategy is in line with India’s strategic planning and thinking around AI. The government invites stakeholders in the robotics and artificial intelligence ecosystem to contribute to the policy formulation process and assist in its successful implementation.
