India-Canada Diplomatic Staff Reduction: Deadline and Evacuations in New Delhi

As reported CTV NewsFriday (6/10/2023), relations between India and Canada worsened after diplomatic disputes related to the recent murder of an Indian separatist leader in Canada, in which Ottawa accused New Delhi government agents of being involved.

Initial reports put the number of Canadian diplomatic staff asked to leave India at 41 people. However, several sources were contacted CTV News said the request was only to fulfill balance requirements.

At the same time, according to reports CTV Newsmost Canadian diplomats working in India, specifically outside New Delhi, have been evacuated to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia or Singapore.

Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian government department in charge of diplomatic and consular relations, previously stated that ‘with several diplomats receiving threats on various social media platforms’, Ottawa authorities were ‘assessing the availability of its staff in India’.

“As a result, and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to temporarily adjust staff presence in India,” Global Affairs Canada said in a statement, days after the Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau accusing the Indian government of involvement in killings on Canadian territory.

On Thursday (5/10) local time, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi told local journalists that discussions regarding the deadline for diplomatic staff to leave New Delhi were ‘ongoing’.
