India will not issue visas to Canadian citizens for the time being. It is a new step in the diplomatic row that arose this week. It started when Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said on Monday that India may be involved in the assassination of a Sikh leader in Canada.
The organization that issues the visas says that the service will be discontinued “until further notice” quietly.
Yesterday, India warned its citizens to be careful if they travel to Canada, or if they are currently in Canada. According to the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, people should be on their guard due to “increasing anti-India activities and politically motivated hate crimes”. Indian diplomats are said to be threatened.
Murder
Last June, Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead by masked men. That happened at a Sikh temple in Canada. Supporters of the religious leader hold India responsible.
Trudeau said Monday that Canadian security services are investigating “credible allegations” that people linked to the Indian government were involved in the liquidation.
The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls Trudeau’s allegations absurd and unfounded. Canada and India have both expelled top diplomats.
Outside India, Canada is home to the most Sikhs, approximately 770,000 people. The Indian government saw Nijjar as a terrorist because he was part of the Khalistan movement. The aim of that movement is to establish a separate state for Sikhs in India.
