India beat England by 112 runs in the first innings of the Ahmedabad Test. England were bowled out for 112 in 48.4 overs. Zack Crowley, who scored his fourth Test half-century of his career, was the brightest in the English line-up. Crowley hit 53 off 84 balls with 10 fours. Apart from Crowley, only captain Joe Root (17 off 37 balls), Joffre Archer (11 off 18 balls) and Ben Fox (12 off 58 balls) saw two wickets. Opener Dominic Sibley (0 off seven balls), Johnny Bairstow (0), Ben Stokes (six), Oli Pope (one), Jack Leach (three) and Stuart Broad (three off 29 balls) all disappointed. James Anderson (0) was not out.
Akshar Patel, who bowled 21.4 overs throughout the match, took six wickets for just 38 runs, including six maiden overs. Ashwin took three wickets for 26 runs in 16 overs and Ishant Sharma took one wicket for 26 runs in five overs. Sibli, who faced just seven balls, was dismissed by Ishant Sharma, who is playing his 100th Test of his career. Rohit Sharma was caught. Johnny Bairstow, who made his debut in the series, took the wicket for Akshar Patel.
