India bans 118 Chinese apps for ‘security reasons’ | NOW

India has the popular game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), WeChat and 116 other Chinese apps blocked immediately. The apps would be guilty of “activities that are harmful to Indian sovereignty,” the Indian reports ministry of Information Technology.

China and India are in conflict over an area on the border of the Himalayas. The area has been disputed for decades, but in recent months tensions have risen and several deaths have occurred.

The Indian government says it has multiple signals that China is trying to steal data via Chinese apps such as WeChat and PUBG. That is why the government has decided to ban 118 Chinese apps.

PUBG is the most popular mobile game in India. The game is owned by South Korean game studio Bluehole, but the mobile version was developed and distributed by China’s Tencent.

India already blocked 59 Chinese apps earlier this year. Chinese citizens wishing to invest in Indian companies must have permission from the Indian government since April.
