India asks Twitter to take messages criticizing corona policy offline | NOW

The government of India has asked Twitter to delete dozens of messages over the past month. Some of these are tweets from local politicians criticizing the way the government is tackling the corona pandemic.

A number of tweets have therefore been withheld, says a Twitter spokesperson Reuters. The newspaper The Indian Express writes that some messages can no longer be viewed only in India. Those messages can still be read elsewhere in the world.

Twitter is assessing all “valid legal requests” against local laws, a company spokesperson said. If Twitter determines that a message is illegal in a certain area but does not violate Twitter’s rules, access to the content will only be limited locally.

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has been shaken by a “storm” of coronavirus infections. A heavy wave has led to more than 300,000 new corona infections per day for four days in a row. Critics say the authorities were insufficiently prepared for the second wave. The future was also insufficiently thought of when the daily number of infections dipped below ten thousand several times in February; major religious and political gatherings were held in India.
