India Approves Bill to Reserve One-Third of Seats in House of Commons for Women: A Move for Gender Equality

The Indian cabinet has approved a bill that would reserve a third of the seats in the House of Commons for women. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reported this during a special session of parliament.

The House of Commons, among others, still has to approve the bill.

The bill was introduced back in 1996. But so far it has never been possible to actually enter it. Now the government is making a new attempt.

Half of India’s 950 million registered voters are women. Yet they only fill 15 percent of the seats in parliament. As a result, India ranks low in the global rankings that track gender ratios in government agencies.
