India accidentally fired a missile at Pakistan this week. That already happened on Wednesday, but was only reported by India on Friday. The incident was caused by a technical failure during routine maintenance, India’s defense ministry said in a statement.
The rocket crashed near the Pakistani city of Mian Channu, about 500 kilometers south of the capital Islamabad. The projectile posed a threat to passenger flights, but no injuries were ultimately reported.
Pakistan is not pleased that the news has come out so late. “It is highly irresponsible of India not to inform us immediately about unwanted missile launches,” said Pakistan’s national security adviser. India says it is “deeply regrettable” and is relieved that no one was killed. An investigation is underway.
Experts point out that both countries have nuclear weapons and that these kinds of incidents can have major consequences.
