In February 2004, at the age of just 34, Italy’s legendary cyclist died, Marco Pantani. His death was officially caused by a cocaine overdose, which was not particularly surprising at first, as it was an open secret about the athlete consuming mind-altering drugs.
However, Tonina, Pantani’s mother, has not been restrained since her son lost her life from an overdose of illicit drugs. Italian police recently launched a new investigation after doubts were raised about the cyclist’s last hours, according to new evidence provided by her mother.
I have reviewed the events several times. I was and still am convinced that the full truth about my son’s death has still not been revealed. It was not clear what had happened in that hotel room in the hours before his death
Tonina Pantani told the Italian news channel Quotidiano Nazionale.
The mother hired new lawyers, with the help of whom they submitted a 51-page document to the police containing proven information about the cyclist’s last days in Rimini, which had not been known so far. The Italian press points out that the evidence suggests that it is
neither xenophobia nor murder can be ruled out in the case.

The case was last investigated in 2014 at the request of the Pantani family, however, the investigation was by police it was soon closed on the grounds that the evidence is merely fictitious conspiracy theories.
Italian sports media point out that traces of injuries and bumps were found on Pantani’s face and arm when the death occurred, but these have not been linked to the cyclist’s death so far. Thus, these factors also raise new questions in the case.
Marco Pantani also won the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia in 1998.
