The expert according to Invasive mosquito species, such as the Asian tiger mosquito, the Korean mosquito, and the Japanese bush mosquito can also be found more and more frequently in Hungary. These mosquito species can spread pathogens such as Zika or Dengue virus.
Chikungunya fever has appeared several times in Italy, where a major epidemic has not yet developed, but the country has already got a taste of the effects of invasive mosquitoes.
– described Gábor Kemenesi, then gave another example of the fact that mosquitoes were not taken into account in Brazil until the Zika virus swept through the country.
In order to prevent epidemics, the Ecological Research Center and the University of Pécs have launched a mosquito monitor program, in which people can also make reports.
If someone is unsure if they see an invasive mosquito, they can take a photo and the experts will help determine this, said Gábor Kemenesi.

After mapping, depletion can be the next step, but Gábor Kemenesi emphasized that in invasive mosquito species only biological depletion can achieve sufficient results, disaster management and chemical depletion are not enough – moreover, the latter by “shaving” the ecosystem with vascular venom.
The virologist emphasized that the population should be informed on how to protect themselves against mosquitoes, as keeping the environment around the house in order can prevent their reproduction and spread. As an example, he mentioned that if we put mosquito nets on barrels or other devices, even if they hatch in wet places, they can’t pinch us.
This will prevent thousands of mosquitoes from hatching in a single garden, he said.

Gábor Kemenesi also stated that – despite some rumors – the coronavirus is not spread by mosquitoes. “Covid or the HIV virus is not spread, but there are plenty tropical disease but yes. If we do not want them to become established in Hungary, we must take action against them, ”the virologist warned.
