Hungary does not approve the European Union’s trade and development agreements with 79 African, Pacific and Caribbean countries, which will require further multi-year negotiations – writes a Reuters.
The veto of an agreement reached by EU diplomats in December could take years to update the two-decade Cotonou Development Treaty with new provisions in areas such as climate protection, human rights and migration.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó justified the new crossroads, among other things, by saying that the convention would bring more immigrants into the European Union. In a press conference posted on Facebook, the politician called the idea that he would result in more immigrants coming to work for a job, with many European jobs being lost due to the coronavirus epidemic, a nonsense.
It is not possible for the European Commission to agree with 79 African, Caribbean and Pacific countries over the heads of member states on another ongoing encouragement of migration, the minister added.
