Independiente’s Frustration as Arsenal Holds Strong: Fifth Game Without Losing

Independiente could not against the self-esteem of an Arsenal that, relegated and all, took a 0-0 this Sunday in Avellaneda, reaching its fifth game in a row without losing and generating a lot of impotence in the home, as was demonstrated with a cross between goalkeeper Alejandro Medina and defender Cristian Báez at the end of the match. “‘That’s how you ended up, that’s why you went down,’ your teammate told me. I didn’t disrespect anyone,” Sarandí’s one explained to several red players once the waters had calmed down, ignited by the unfortunate charge of the central.

Medina, one of the figures of the night, also unloaded in front of the cameras: “I wish him the best, I hope he always has to wear that shirt (the Independiente one), because he is very big. I would never wish harm on a teammate. I hope I have enough balls to fix it in another way. But hey, nothing. One is in a shitty situation, we couldn’t maintain the category and it’s a shame that a colleague who lives off the same thing as one, disrespects you. A “Sometimes you can’t contain yourself and react this way. I end up looking bad but nothing happens.”

Before the final heats and charges there was a match in which Independiente missed a chance that seemed appropriate to recover from the 3-0 loss suffered against River last date. A win that took its toll on Carlos Tevez, given that he once again used the five in the back used during most of his red cycle.

As usually happens with this tactical system, the full-backs became the home team’s main attacking option. Of course, Damián Pérez’s offensive forays were much more productive than those of the Chilean Mauricio Isla, whose performance was weak, especially when it came to passing.

Pérez’s night improved considerably in the second half, when he teamed up with the new addition Braian Martínez, the one who knew how to be an outstanding figure in the Clásico de Avellaneda not so long ago but now came off the bench. The Chaco native, with his ability to dribble and go forward, took over the team and was able to excite the public present in Avellaneda from time to time.

Independiente also benefited from the arrival of the kid Ruiz (19 years old; fourth game in First Division), owner of a good combo of momentum when it comes to working and ability to face. If Martínez (24 years old) and Ruiz improved the face of Tevez’s team, it was largely due to the considerably veteran starting eleven that stopped the most pampered coach of recent Red times: nine starters aged 30 or over who became tired with the ticking of the clock.

As a counterpart, Arsenal and their fresh legs (between midfield and attack they averaged 23 pirulos) compensated for the difference in hierarchy. And what the Sarandi effort did not compensate, Medina did, showing off with very good saves, especially a double action against Pérez and Canelo to remember.

Thus, Arsenal, relegated several dates ago, continues to defy logic and stretched its undefeated record to five games (two wins). For its part, Rojo remains second in Zone A but must hope that this drop (one point from the last six) does not make it think about permanence again.
