Independiente del Valle Secures First Win in the Copa Libertadores Against Liverpool

Guayaquil (Ecuador), Apr 18 (EFE).- Independiente del Valle corrected the course on Tuesday after a debut with a defeat in the Copa Libertadores by beating Liverpool 2-0 on the second day of Group E, thus linking their second loss.

Júnior Sornoza, at 27 minutes, and Alan Minda, at 67, converted the goals for the Ecuadorian team’s first win, which on the first day lost to Argentinos Juniors 1-0.

The goalkeeper Sebastián Britos was the star of his team but he could not prevent the defeat, because Independiente attacked insistently and from all fronts until scoring the first goal through a header from Sornoza off a pass from Michael Hoyos.

Britos prevented at least three more chances for the Negriazules to score, after two shots from Sornoza, and from the Argentines Cristian Pellerano and Lautaro Díaz, as well as from the Chilean Matías Fernández.

Independiente del Valle dominated practically the entire first half against a team made up of impetuous youngsters.

But the dominance of the rival did not translate into many more goals.

Hoyos tried a violent shot that, after being deflected by Britos, crashed into the crossbar at minute 60.

So much was the insistence of the Ecuadorian team that they scored the second goal, through the recently entered Minda, who took advantage of a pass to the left side from Sornoza, advanced quickly, faced and beat the goalkeeper with a shot to his left side.

The new reinforcement of the Ecuadorian team, the Bolivian Marcelo Moreno Martins entered at minute 73 to replace Hoyos, but failed to contribute to extend the advantage.

On the third date, Independiente del Valle will visit the Brazilians Corinthians and Liverpool will host Argentinos Juniors.
