Scotland plans to rejoin the European Union

The Scottish government has announced that an independent Scotland would like to rejoin the European Union as quickly as possible. This move would come after Scotland gains independence from the United Kingdom. The Scottish National Party (SNP) is currently in government and has clear plans to re-join the EU.

Efforts for EU membership

The Scottish Government stressed that Scotland would “apply to rejoin the EU as soon as possible” following independence, although this is not currently foreseeable. The pro-independence government made its comments in an official paper outlining the benefits of EU membership.

Different positions in Westminster

Given the position of the main parties in Westminster, the only way for Scotland to return to the EU is to become an independent country. None of Britain’s other major parties are currently advocating for the UK to rejoin the EU.

Review of the Brexit referendum

After the Brexit referendum in 2016, Scotland left the EU along with the rest of the United Kingdom. Although the UK as a whole voted to leave, Scotland overwhelmingly wanted to remain part of the union.

The accession process

The Scottish government stated that an independent Scotland would follow the normal accession process, known as Article 49, which typically takes several years. It was also made clear that Scotland would not be required to adopt the euro currency, but would instead wish to introduce its own currency, the “new Scottish pound”.

SNP future plans

The SNP stressed it will claim a mandate for independence negotiations with London if it wins a majority of Scottish seats in the next British election, expected in 2024.
