The British government has launched an independent investigation into the London police over the rape of and murder on Sarah Everard by an agent.
The murder has “exposed unimaginable flaws in the police force,” said British Home Secretary Patel. “It is appalling that a police officer on duty could abuse his position of power and trust to commit such a heinous crime. We need to know how all this could have happened to ensure that nothing like this is ever repeated.”
The agent, 48-year-old Wayne Couzens, was given a life sentence last week imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The London police have already launched their own investigation.
Couzens behavior investigated
Patel says the new investigation will consist of two parts: Couzens’ behavior leading up to the murder and the internal culture of the police force. This concerns, for example, the question of how it is possible that Couzens’ behavior has not been identified as problematic before. According to The Guardian he was called “the rapist” by former colleagues and showed his genitals in public on two occasions.
Everard, 33, was walking on the street in London one March evening when she was stopped by Couzens. He claimed she had broken the lockdown rules and forced her into a car. Everard was raped and strangled by the cop in a forest. The story brought a lot discussions on the safety of women on the street.
