INDE will build more than 2,900 kilometers of power lines for 40 thousand families

The Congress of the Republic of Guatemala approved a loan for 120 million dollars (equivalent to approximately 926 million quetzales) to finance the Rural Electrification Infrastructure Program (PIER).

The funding comes from Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and of Korea Investment Fund (KIF). The initiative includes the construction of 2,900 kilometers of medium and low voltage lines to connect approximately 200 thousand people in the lower regions.

Beneficial communities

The INDE announced Suddenly, Quiche, Petin, Isabel y the Verapaces as the priority sectors of this project, as they exhibit the greatest signs of delay in electrification and human development.

Currently, across the country there are more than 377 thousand households without access to electricity. With the implementation of the PIER, this deficit will be reduced by 10%, marking a significant improvement in access to basic services.

The importance of the project

The INDE confirmed that this initiative responds to the urgency of electrifying the country, an obligation established in the Constitution of Guatemala. In addition, he pointed out that access to clean and affordable energy is essential in promoting the social, economic and environmental development of the most vulnerable communities.

“With this loan, we reaffirm our commitment to guaranteeing electricity to the families that need it the most,” INDE’s official statement said.

Future outlook

The implementation of the PIER is only one part of INDE’s efforts to reduce inequalities in access to energy. The authorities hope that this project will be the basis for future investments in infrastructure that will contribute to the comprehensive development of rural communities.[[AGN]
