John Arne Riise’s coaching career in Avaldsnes started with a loss in the first three matches in the Toppserien and 0-11 in goal difference, but the team came to Oslo and the match against Vålerenga with four points in the last two matches.

Vålerenga, for their part, had won their first six games of the season, and were the big favorite in Sunday’s game.

And with good reason. In the end, Vålerenga won Sunday’s match 6-0.

– What we learned today is where the level is. I think Vålerenga is the best team in the Toppserien as of today. When we lack more players, it becomes a match where we think we should try to keep the zero as long as possible and see. 6-0 looks ugly, but I am incredibly proud of the girls and the job they put down. Now I have to lift them and let them understand that this is just learning, Riise says to VG.

HEAVY MATCH: John Arne Riise out on the field in connection with Evelyn Badu being down with injury in the first half.

All of Vålerenga’s goals came in the period between the match’s 35 and 65 minutes, and Riise says that apart from the half hour where “there was a bit of chaos”, he thinks it was fine.

– But you know what, I’m extremely proud of the girls. I have tears in my eyes. If you look at my team – it’s a 16-year-old, several 17-year-olds and 18-year-olds. They get to play in the Toppserien, and for me it’s fantastic. This is not the battle we are going to win. This is learning for the girls.

– It took a while before we got a hole in the boil. They defended well until the first goal came, and then I think that when the first goal came, they gave up a bit, and then we continued to paint and got goals number two, three, four, five and six, says Vålerenga striker Elise Thorsnes.

GOT A CHRISTMAS: John Arne Riise and Avaldsnes hung on for the first half hour, but were eventually thoroughly beaten away against Vålerenga.

Vålerenga and Avaldsnes each started with their own national team profile at the top in the two former teammates Elise Thorsnes (130 international matches) and Karina Sævik (29 international matches), and it was eventually Vålerengas Thorsnes who should get the most to cheer for.

Avaldsnes defended well for a long time in a deep 4-5-1 formation, but just after half an hour had been played, two Vålerenga goals came in two minutes after a corner kick – the first from Agnete Nielsen, the second from the mentioned Thorsnes.

In overtime in the first half, Janni Thomsen increased the lead to 3-0 with a nice shot from 12-13 meters.

In the second half, Vålerenga had full control, and eventually won 6-0 after goals from Nielsen, Thorsnes and Thomsen.

It is the second time this season that Avaldsnes loses by six goals, after they also lost 0-6 in the series opener against Rosenborg. The Rogalands club played its first season in the Toppserien in 2013, and had a 0-5 loss against Arna-Bjørnar in 2014 as its biggest loss in the Toppserien before this year’s season.

CHEERS: The Vålerenga players got a lot to cheer for in Sunday’s match.

The big winner sends Vålerenga up to the top of the table. Before the round, Brann was ahead on several goals scored, and they struggled for a 2-1 victory over Kolbotn. VIF passes by on goal difference.

Brann’s match against Kolbotn started half an hour after Vålerenga’s match, but just over a quarter of an hour into the second half, Brann leads “only” 2-1.

Medal-chasing Rosenborg went on a surprising bang and lost 0-1 at home against Lyn.

The top series will end in 2022 with two playoffs. The four best teams after the first 18 ordinary series rounds meet for a play-off for the victory in the Toppserien, while the bottom six teams meet the top two teams from the 1st division to a separate play-off.

The two worst teams in that playoff game must play in the 1st division next season.

The division system has received some criticism, as the points from the first 18 matches have no significance for the teams from 5th to 10th place in the Toppserien further into their playoffs.

For the top teams, however, it has a meaning. Best team takes six points, number two four points, number three two points, while number four starts the playoffs with zero points.

The battle for first place seems to be between Brann, Vålerenga and Rosenborg.

Brann won at home against Rosenborg earlier in the season, and next Sunday comes the next top match. Then it is last year’s league champions Brann who come to Oslo and will try to be the first point to take points against Vålerenga.
