“Incredibly beautiful!” This is how Rapid made a historic comeback

September 13, 1985 – On that day, SK Rapid Vienna did the trick for the last time to convert a two-goal deficit into a win.

While it was Salzburg AK 35 years ago, Sturm Graz is now the victim of these statistics.

The Hütteldorfer made a 0: 2 at half time and turned the game in the last minute thanks to Joker Ercan Kara in a win (match report >>>). “It is of course an incredibly nice win for all of us, because it was also not unimportant,” said Rapid head coach Didi Kühbauer after the win over “Sky”.

After two defeats in a row against TSV Hartberg and the historic 2-7 swatter against Red Bull Salzburg, the Viennese are now beating past the LASK again to the second place in the master group table.

Kühbauer: “First half was fear football”

In order to celebrate a great comeback, however, a team has to fall behind – as happened in the first half. After the game, Kühbauer finds clear words about his team’s performance in the first round.

“The first half was scaredy soccer. We could hardly keep a ball in our own ranks. Sturm didn’t play big football either, but it was enough that they were 2-0 up. Basically, after a 2: 0 very difficult to come back, “says the 49-year-old.

Rapid’s Achilles’ heel was again the standard, as in the duel against Salzburg. “It really does matter to me to talk about it now. For me it was more important that the team showed a reaction after the break, that we were rewarded. That is the decisive factor when there are so few games left.”

The response was a good one, as the end result shows. “The second half meant that we did what we wanted to do from the start. We let the ball go, we had a lot more movement around the ball, we also looked for depth, we worked through combinations Storm was mentally and physically not up to scratch and we took advantage of it, “said Kühbauer.

Gold scorer Kara: “I’m coming in slowly”

So it was Joker Ercan Kara who made the rapid comeback perfect in the 90th minute. “I did my job, I came in. I gave and met everything, a nice day,” Kara says happily.

The 24-year-old center forward also scored a goal in the previous Bundesliga game against Salzburg. Kara seems to have slowly arrived in Hütteldorf. “It’s going a bit. It’s good for me. I’m coming in slowly. It makes me happy that I can help my team with it.”
