Jakarta –
Total Solar Eclipse which hit North America, has presented a spectacular sight. One of them had strange pink spots all over it.
Quoted detikINET from IFL Science, some who watched may have seen bright pink, red and orange colors emerging from the Sun like ribbons. This is called the prominence of the Sun or solar prominence. What’s that?
Solar prominences cannot usually be seen with the naked eye, but a total solar eclipse provides a rare opportunity to see them. “This structure is often visible as a red or pink feature during total solar eclipses,” said EarthSky.
According to NASA, a solar prominence is a large, bright feature that extends out from the surface of the Sun. Formed from plasma, these bulges are anchored in the Sun’s photosphere and extend into its outer atmosphere, or corona.
These protrusions can vary in size and shape. Usually, its diameter is longer than the diameter of the Earth, some even reaching millions of kilometers. Often one end is attached to the Sun, creating an effect that looks like a ribbon.
The reddish color comes from the electrically charged hydrogen and helium in the plasma. Yesterday’s total solar eclipse occurred very close to the Sun’s maximum period, when the Sun is in its most active condition and the possibility of flares and coronal mass ejections (CME) is highest.
When the cycle reaches its peak like now, we are treated to various phenomena including solar prominence during an eclipse. Indeed, when solar activity is at a minimum level, this solar prominence phenomenon can still be seen around the edge of the Sun.
However, during the maximum solar period, the number of protrusions is even more abundant. That is why this phenomenon often appears in many photos of the Solar Eclipse several days ago.
