Security at and around the Christmas markets in Valkenburg is being increased due to the increased threat level in the Netherlands. Mayor Prevoo says otherwise 1Limburg.

Yesterday, the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) announced that the threat level in the Netherlands has been increased from 3 (significant) to 4 (substantial). This means that there is a real chance that an attack will take place in the Netherlands.

Unreal

The Christmas markets in Valkenburg are visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. “A Christmas market is therefore of course a good target. It is a bit unreal,” says Prevoo.

At the end of November, two more teenagers were arrested for plotting an attack on a Christmas market in Germany. On December 1, a 20-year-old German IS sympathizer was arrested for announcing online that he wanted to attack visitors to a Christmas market.

Unprecedentedly busy

The mayor of Valkenburg does not want to cause panic among visitors, but neither does he want to downplay the increased threat level. “We are unprecedentedly busy. That also makes us extra vulnerable. We are already sold out during the weekends. Be wise, see if you can come on a weekday. The more spread, the better we can guarantee safety.”
