Increased risk of legionella after returning from vacation

According to Techniek Nederland, the risk of legionella contamination is greatest after the holiday period. Taps are not used during holidays, as a result of which the water in the pipes comes to a standstill and the water temperature quickly rises above 25 degrees. These two factors have a negative effect on the quality of tap water, which increases the chance of the legionella bacteria multiplying. Legionella bacteria can cause fatigue, loss of short-term memory, pneumonia and severe flu. In some cases, a legionella infection can even be fatal. There are several hundred reports every year, but in reality there are probably many more Legionella infections.

At home first turn on the shower

Techniek Nederland advises returning holidaymakers to let the shower run smoothly for four to five minutes when they return home, to prevent the water from misting. Infection mainly takes place by inhaling the water mist, which causes the bacteria to settle in the lungs. This can be prevented by holding the spray head under water in a bucket or hiding the shower head in a washcloth.

Fast forward

Flushing after the holidays is important to guarantee the quality of the water. Flushing also ensures that substances that are dissolved in the water, such as metals from the drinking water pipe, are washed away.

A garden plant that hangs in full sun can also heat up considerably, which can cause legionella to develop. That is why it is also important to rinse a garden hose that is not used daily. Other tips are to ensure that hot water from taps has a temperature of at least 55 degrees, never to adjust the drinking water installations yourself, but to have that done by a recognized installation company. And hot tubs need to be cleaned and sanitized regularly.

Holiday destination

Attention to legionella is not only important at home. Dozens of travelers probably also contract an infection every year at holiday destinations. The risk is especially great if the apartment or holiday home has not been occupied for a long time. As a precautionary measure, it is also recommended in this case to flush all taps for a few minutes.
