“increase the resources allocated to medical and nursing staff” – MelfiLive.it

We receive and publish the following press release sent to us yesterday by the regional councilor of the 5 Star Movement, the Melfi native Alessia Araneo:

“Yesterday I played at home! I visited the “San Giovanni di Dio” hospital in Melfi, conducted by the general director Spera and the medical director Labianca, whom I thank for the time dedicated to me and for the frank conversation.”

“A historic hospital for the Melfi community, but above all a border hospital: serving the entire Vulture area, open to Campania and Puglia. And it is precisely by virtue of this role that the Melfi hospital deserves attention and valorisation. Visiting the departments, including areas of excellence such as the operating rooms with cutting-edge technology park, one theme emerged with particular force: the need to increase the resources allocated to medical and nursing staff.”

“The staff, in fact, whose profound self-sacrifice tries to express the best possible quality of care, complains of discomfort linked precisely to this deficiency. A deficiency that the general director made himself available to fill, while underlining the need to modify the current organizational model.”

Based on what has emerged, I believe that there are two fundamental actions to be taken urgently:

  1. increase in hiring in the nursing and social-health sector. This step is essential to ensure more efficient management and to respond to the real needs of a hospital that plays a fundamental role in our community. The increase in staff will make it possible to ease the pressure on workers and improve the quality of care.

  2. Launch of training internships for nursing staff. Although internships cannot fully resolve the issue, they represent a complementary and useful measure to alleviate staff shortages. It is necessary to initiate discussions with the University of Basilicata and other university institutes so that students can be directed to the hospital, in order to train new professionals and, at the same time, enhance new energies.

“Our intervention must be guided by a vision that cannot be reduced to corporate logic, which risks neutralizing or marginalizing the essential function of healthcare as a universal right, for all and every person.”

“We are aware of the difficulties associated with managing budgets and resources, but it is necessary to firmly insist on the importance of a structural intervention to strengthen the workforce. Strengthening services, especially primary and essential ones such as access to care, is the only way to respond – and not succumb – to the pressing depopulation.”

“Only with adequate hiring and an organization that places the person at the centre, without sacrificing the dignity of the operators, can we guarantee public healthcare that meets all the needs of our community.”

“New challenges await us, starting with the rethinking of the current healthcare organization in the area. Let’s get to work, let’s open up to a process of participation and planning from below.”
