Increase in Sale of Pepper Spray After Recent Attacks: Calls to Legalize for Self-Defense in Australia

Sydney: Following the recent attacks that have affected the country, the sale of pepper spray has reportedly increased significantly in Western Australia. People called on the authorities to consider legalizing the possession of pepper spray for self-defense.

Only Western Australia currently allows people to carry non-lethal spray under strict conditions. Following the attack at the Westfield shopping center in Sydney’s Bondi Junction, traders said demand for pepper spray products had increased in the past week, Australian media ABC reported.

Pepper spray is also known as oleoresin capsicum spray. Jeff Rodwell, a pepper spray retailer in Western Australia, said orders from his website URSafe had quadrupled in the past week. Orders were received from other parts of Australia but could not be accepted. He also said that people want to keep themselves safe in case of any attack again.

As early as 2018, the federal government was being asked to allow pepper spray to be brought into the country and for states and localities to legalize its use for self-defense.

Fraser Anning of the party in Australia argued that it would provide a non-lethal and easy-to-use method of protection. But others said there would be a wide range of weapons. So the proposal failed 46-5. According to Western Australia’s Firearms Act 1999, pepper spray can only be carried for legitimate defense purposes when there are “reasonable grounds”.
