Increase in positive corona tests, possibly due to carnival, winter sports and relaxation

Between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 48,503 positive tests were registered in the Netherlands. That is the highest number in two weeks, according to figures from the RIVM. According to GGD GHOR Nederland, this is probably due to a combination of carnival, returning winter sports enthusiasts and the relaxed measures.

There has also been a significant increase in the number of test appointments. Yesterday, more than 90,000 test appointments were made. A day earlier, according to the GGD, there were still about 67,000. In the south of the country there has been an increase since Carnival. But more people are also being tested in the north of the country. There it is mainly people who return from winter sports.

A spokesperson for GGD Noord-Limburg says 1Limburg know that the test capacity is being scaled up, because the ceiling with 4000 of a maximum of 4200 appointments per day has almost been reached. In South Limburg, the test capacity has already more than doubled from a maximum of 2000 to 4250 test appointments. An increase has already been taken into account this week.

The three Brabant GGDs also indicated on Tuesday that they expected a virus revival due to carnival and the relaxed corona measures. Today it is according to Broadcasting Brabant already reflected in the test streets. About 5000 people were tested at GGD Brabant-Zuidoost alone. Last week there were around 2000 a day.

Carnival villages Overijssel

It is also busier than previous days at corona test locations in Overijssel, message RTV East† Especially around carnival villages such as Oldenzaal and Borne, the test streets are busier. And the number of positive tests is now also higher. According to the GGD, it is not yet possible to say whether the higher infection figures are actually the result of carnival.

The crowds in the test streets are not only caused by more people wanting to be tested, but also by the number of corona infections among employees. The queues can therefore be longer than usual in some places, such as in Eindhoven. The GGD is happy that people are being tested, because it is important to keep an eye on the number of infections.
