“Lebanon Debate”
Infiltration of displaced Syrians through the border areas extending along the border strip has recently increased, and according to almost daily data from the Lebanese Army, thousands of displaced people are being attempted to enter Lebanon illegally.
In this context, security sources confirmed to “Lebanon Debate” that there are mafias and gangs made up of Lebanese and Syrians who organize crossing trips through rugged corridors, at a cost ranging between 100 and 400 US dollars per person.
The sources pointed out that “the number of infiltrators increases daily, despite the high cost,” revealing that “the army stops between one and two thousand infiltrators weekly, and this is a very large number.”
She revealed that “during the investigation by the Lebanese army with some of the detainees, it was found that they were entering Lebanon with the aim of setting off from there by sea via illegal immigration boats towards Europe.”
According to the sources, this means that the infiltrators who risk their lives receive promises from smuggling gangs, either to remain in Lebanon to benefit from the benefits of international organizations, or to cross on illegal immigration boats to Europe.”
She stressed that “these infiltrators fall victim to these mafias and gangs, which leave them alone at sea, and their journey often ends in a tragic way,” noting that “illegal migration across the sea increased remarkably with the start of new waves of displacement to Lebanon.”
She regretted “what some mukhtars are doing, who are deliberately forging some of the infiltrators’ identification documents in order for them to move absolutely freely within Lebanon.”
It seems that these mafias are exploiting the deteriorating economic situation in Syria to tempt the citizens of this country with the meager solutions that Lebanon can offer, noting that Lebanon is not in a better position to bear this huge burden.
