Increase in gasoline hits Coatepec coffee producers

Increases in gasoline affect inputs such as fertilizer used by coffee producers, so it is increasingly “difficult” to maintain coffee plantations, said the member of the Regional Coffee Council in Coatepec, Cirilo Elotlán Díaz.

Interviewed, he said that producers are already beginning to prepare with pruning and cleaning for the next planting, however, the resources that are required are increasingly more.

“We are already preparing, they already start with the pruning, clean, then the fertilization comes, waiting for it to rain; right now there is the campaign against CBB and in May comes the campaign against rust ”, he commented.

He exemplified that in the past sowing a bundle of fertilizer cost 300 pesos, however, at this time it already oscillates at 400 pesos and at least six are required for one hectare.

“The worrying thing is how to maintain these coffee plantations, we have serious problems, the resource to provide maintenance is not enough. To maintain a coffee plantation is complicated. Once the harvest comes out, you have to clean it, but the most important thing is to fertilize; the increase in fuels, gasoline, that increases everything, “he explained.

Finally, he specified that it is necessary to prepare well in the field, so as not to have losses in crops.

“So that most of that flowering tie well and we have a good production for 2021-2022, that there are no losses,” he concluded.
