Increase in Enrollment of Foreign Students at Brandenburg Universities for 2022/23 Winter Semester

Potsdam (dpa/bb) – While the number of students at Brandenburg universities fell slightly in the 2022/23 winter semester, the influx from countries outside Europe continues. 7,522 students from so-called third countries were recently enrolled at Brandenburg’s state universities, 370 more than in the 2021/2022 winter semester.

The Ministry of Science in Potsdam announced this in a previously unpublished answer to a request from state parliament member Daniela Oeynhausen (AfD). The answer is available to the German Press Agency. The total number of students fell by 122 to 50,427 in the 2022/23 winter semester.

Third countries are all states that are not members of the EU and the Efta free trade area. The EU consists of 28 countries, the Efta consists of Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Switzerland.

In total, exactly 10,841 foreign students were enrolled for the 2022/23 winter semester. That was 1,363 more than in the previous winter semester. According to the ministry, Brandenburg has the second highest proportion of foreign students in the country at 21.5 percent. Only in Berlin is this value higher at 23.7 percent.

According to the ministry, the most popular subjects studied by foreigners over the past ten years were environmental and resource management, law and business administration.

MP Oeynhausen was pleased with the positive reputation of Brandenburg’s universities abroad. Unfortunately, it is unclear how many university graduates stayed in Brandenburg. “So what benefit the country has from this,” Oeynhausen told the dpa.
