The number of refugees from Ukraine who have found paid work in the Netherlands has increased again. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), half of them, aged 15 to 65, had work on May 1. Six months earlier that was still 44 percent.
The share of Ukrainian refugees in paid employment rose most strongly among women in six months, the statistics agency notes. For example, on November 1 last year, 44 percent of them had work, at the beginning of May this year this was 51 percent. Of the men, 49 percent had a paid job according to the most recent figures from Statistics Netherlands.
Most refugees worked as on-call or temporary workers. Many people also had other temporary employment contracts. The majority worked part-time: almost three in ten worked 30 to 35 hours. 18 percent of Ukrainian refugees had full-time jobs of 35 hours or more, the statistics agency said.
Most people had a job in business services, just over half. But because the temporary employment sector also falls under this sector, it is difficult for CBS to determine which industries Ukrainians ultimately ended up in. In addition, 31 percent of refugees from Ukraine work in the trade, transport and catering sectors.
CBS notes that Ukrainian refugees do not need a work permit to work in the Netherlands. This puts them in an exceptional position compared to other migrants from outside the European Union and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The EFTA is a partnership between the EU, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. (AP)
