▶ Due to climate change, the number of infected people in the United States increases. New York State 74 people, 2nd place in the country ⋯ New York City 57 people
A ‘Dengue Fever’ virus advisory has been issued in New York City. Dengue fever is an endemic mosquito-borne disease in tropical regions, but the number of infected people in the United States is increasing every year due to climate change, and this year, 57 people were infected in New York City alone.
According to data from the Federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on the 27th, as of today, the total number of dengue virus infections in the United States this year reached 997. A total of 44 states were infected, with New York State having the second highest number (74) including New York City, followed by Florida (226).
In the past, dengue fever cases mainly occurred among travelers who had visited tropical regions, but recently, the number of patients with infections unrelated to travel has been increasing.
The number of dengue fever patients in the United States nearly tripled from 814 in 2021 to 2,261 in 2022, and more than 50% were infections unrelated to travel.
Experts predicted that the increase in dengue fever cases in the United States will continue due to urbanization and climate change.
The journal Nature also pointed out in a recent study that the incidence of dengue virus in the Americas, including the United States, is the highest since 1980, and that this is because the region is changing into a hotter and more humid environment where mosquitoes can thrive.
Meanwhile, according to the CDC, dengue virus infection causes fever, nausea, vomiting, rash, eye pain (usually behind the eyes), muscle, joint or bone pain. These symptoms generally last for 2 to 7 days, but as the fever subsides, the condition can worsen significantly, so caution is required. If the pain becomes severe or you vomit more than three times within 24 hours, you should immediately visit a hospital and receive treatment.
