Increase in Book Restriction Attempts in New Braunfels Libraries: A Look at the Controversy

Libraries in New Braunfels have seen an increase in book restriction attempts, or book challenges, since the summer.

The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung reports that since June, many residents have expressed their disagreement at several city council meetings over alleged inappropriate books found in libraries.

31 books with themes that discuss sexual health, gender and sexuality issues are being questioned.

78 people have submitted 360 book review forms… but only 15 of them were found to be eligible to submit because they met the requirement of having library registration credentials.

Of the 8 books that have already been reviewed by a collection development librarian, only one was moved from its original place in the teen section to the adult collection.

According to a report from the American Library Association, Texas was the state with the highest number of attempts to ban or restrict books in 2022.

Most of the books that have been attempted to ban talk about issues related to the LGBTQ community and anti-racist ideas.
