Incorrect Use of High Dose Vitamin D Leads to Death of 89-Year-Old in UK, Business Insider Reports

In the UK, long-term uncontrolled use of large doses of vitamin D resulted in death for 89-year-old David Mitchener. The incident was reported by Business Insider (BI).

As the publication’s journalists learned, the elderly man took large doses of vitamin D for nine months because he wanted to improve his health. Due to an overdose of the dietary supplement, he developed hypercalcemia, which in turn led to kidney and heart failure.

The Briton was taken to hospital in serious condition, where he died 10 days later.

It is noted that Mitchener’s blood tests showed the “maximum values” of vitamin D levels among the results ever recorded in the laboratory. At the same time, British coroner Jonathan Stevens indicated in his conclusion that the instructions for the dietary supplement did not indicate the side effects that occur when it is abused.

Earlier, endocrinologist Ekaterina Young dispelled the main myths about vitamins. In particular, she noted that it is possible to combine the intake of different vitamins.
