Dismantling a grenade found during work near Leeuwarden station took so much time that today there are no trains running between Leeuwarden and Harlingen for a large part of the day. Rail carrier Arriva uses buses on the route.

The grenade was detonated by the Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service. It was an explosive from the Second World War. A spokesperson for ProRail says otherwise Omrop Fryslân that train traffic between Leeuwarden and Harlingen can probably be restarted at the end of the afternoon. Work is being done on the tracks and platforms at Leeuwarden station and the discovery of the grenade halted that work for hours.

Work is underway on the railway throughout Friesland. This weekend, train traffic from Leeuwarden to Harlingen, Stavoren and Heerenveen was at a standstill. The Dutch Railways already had announced that there will be no trains running between Akkrum and Leeuwarden in the week of October 23 to 29. The sprinter between Leeuwarden and Zwolle is therefore not driving.
