After Max Verstappen was able to pass Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton relatively easily, the Dutchman drove comfortably to victory in Mexico. In the latest RacingNews365 podcast, Tom Coronel and Ruud Dimmers discuss, among other things, the failed start of the Mercedes drivers, where Bottas is mainly blamed.
Coronel does not understand that Bottas and Hamilton were not defending the ideal racing line. “That’s also exactly where the grip is. You also just know that if those two choose the inside, they can’t go back. Then you know that you have to brake earlier. Max already knew when he was on the left side: “So , they are mine.'” Dimmers looked in disbelief at the start of the race. “I thought the door was really wide open with Bottas.”
“How can you seriously play it out like two Mercedes on the front row. I don’t get it, you leave the ideal line free for Max. If he had started from pole, he would have had the one on his left through the grass If necessary, let the 100 meter sign eat it, but you don’t open the door! I really don’t understand it at all.”
Bottas in the middle, Hamilton was stuck
According to Coronel, Hamilton could do little against Verstappen’s attack. “It was Bottas who went in the middle, Lewis couldn’t go anywhere. It was like Bottas just said ‘get it nice’, it just seems like he is helping Max.” Dimmers adds: “Of course I thought it was nice for Max and for the Netherlands, but it was such a childishly simple action.”
