“Incomprehensible that strict corona measures still apply in the construction sector” Inland

Bouwunie does not understand that the strict corona measures still apply in the construction sector and asks for a quick relaxation. “From 1 September, people are allowed to dance and eat together at the staff party, but the day after they are not allowed in the work van together. We no longer get this explained to the building contractors and their workers. Moreover, the current corona measures are still costing contractors daily. money”, says managing director Jean-Pierre Waeytens.

After the first corona wave last year, the social partners in the construction sector worked out a sector protocol to safely restart activities. These measures still apply and Waeytens calls that “incomprehensible”. “We argued in June to relax these rules before the construction holiday so that we could work efficiently again from September, but that has not been successful until today.”

Due to the strict transport rules, it is often impossible to use all the seats in the vans. As a result, contractors face additional costs because they provide extra transport or pay relocation allowances if employees use their own transport. “In addition, the additional vehicles often cause a lack of space on the construction sites and extra traffic on the road,” says Waeytens, who calls the measures dated. Strict measures still apply at the shipyards and there is a lot of extra organizational hassle. For example, the number of contractors per location still needs to be limited.

Bouwunie therefore asks for the generic guide to be adapted so that construction can work normally again and collective transport can be organized with maximum occupancy again. A total abolition of the measures is not necessary, but Bouwunie wants the construction industry to be able to work in a more efficient and profitable way again, especially given the high vaccination coverage and the relaxation in the catering industry. “We are looking at the authorities to take the necessary action for this, because this situation is absurd,” Waeytens concludes.
